RECOMMENDATION ON OBSERVANCE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING
DAY
The Senate endorses the attached petition
statement.
PETITION
Martin Luther
King Day was congressionally and constitutionally designated a United States
Federal Holiday to be celebrated on the third Monday in January, beginning in
1986 and continuing on the same day each year thereafter. As of this date,
there is no official recognition of said designated holiday on the campus of
We the believers
of the constitutionality in and of the Martin Luther King federal observance
are petitioning the students, University Senate, executive administration, and
the MTU Student Governance to recognize and observe Martin Luther King Day on
the MTU campus.
We the
petitioners suggest that on this third Monday of January, and those third
Mondays of January through the twenty-first century, be recognized as a half
day observance. This petition requests that all faculty, staff, and student
body be relieved of respective charges, duties and classes starting at 2:00
p.m. on said third Monday in order to participate, attend, and observe the
programming in respect of Martin Luther King Day.
