MTU vs. Grand Valley State Football
and Pasty Tailgater

WOW!  What an event THIS turned out to be!  We thought the weather couldn't be any worse that it was last year for the Ferris State football game.  Well, were we wrong!  We experienced an incredible rainstorm, complete with lighning and thunder.  But the weather still couldn't dampen the spirit of Husky fans.  We had 162 people signed up for the event (making this our largest event ever!), and still, all but a small handful came to the event!  (Some even stayed to the very bitter end, after the game was finally called after midnight.)  Fortunately, GVSU had supplied us with a large tent to help keep us out of the rain and wind (well, mostly, anyway), and the tent was able to withstand the wind and weather.  We had pasties from Marie's, beer from Schmohz, hot cinnamon apple cider, a raffle for FREE prizes (MTU's Steph Olsson was on hand for the event), and plenty of other munchies!

Here's the story as it was reported on the GVSU website the following day:

"The Grand Valley State-Michigan Tech football game Saturday night in Allendale, Michigan was declared a No Contest at 12:15 AM due to lightning.  Grand Valley State led 7-3 and was on the Michigan Tech three-yard line with 8:12 left in the second quarter when the game was called. The game was delayed from a 7 PM start back to 8:53 due to lightning and was delayed again at 9:30 just as the first quarter ended with GVSU leading 7-0. MTU opened the second quarter with a drive that resulted in a 22-yard field goal, but the Lakers drove back down the field and had a 1st and goal when lightning was detected again in a close proximity to Lubbers Stadium."

And here's the official story as reported by Michigan Tech:

"Michigan Tech traveled to #1 Grand Valley State to wrap up its 2005 regular season last Saturday (Nov. 5) and came home with neither a win nor a loss.  The contest, which was scheduled to start at 7 p.m., was delayed three times due to lightning and eventually called off at midnight.  Little over one and one-half quarters had been played in the game, but the results and statistics were wiped out because the game was declared “no contest.”  Michigan Tech ended with a 6-3 record -- its second-best winning percentage (.667) as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference."

Unfortunately, we don't have pictures from this year's event.  (I think you can probably understand why...)  But you can be sure that we'll be at the next West Michigan chapter event with camera in hand!
