Our Seventh Annual MTU vs. GVSU Basketball event sponsored by the MTU West Michigan Chapter was held on Saturday afternoon, February 5, 2005 in the upper mezzanine area of the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Michigan. A great turnout of enthusiastic West Michigan alumni met on a sunny, unusually warm Saturday afternoon on the campus of Grand Valley State to witness the always intense rivalry between these two teams. Those who stayed after the men's game were treated to am inspirational talk by the "real" Coach Ken Carter.
MTU vs. GVSU Basketball 2005
Following the 1:00 start of the first game participants enjoyed sub sandwiches, chips, drinks (the non-alcoholic variety) and too-sweet (if there is such a thing) sugar cookies decorated with frosting in MTU's colors. Arena Fieldhouse. Between games, and between mouthfuls of chips and sandwiches, an update on West Michigan alumni activities was presented.
The gather concluded with the awarding of Tech memorabilia, compliments of Steph Olsson and the Alumni Association, to many of the attendees. Unfortunately, Steph could not make the event, as he was "fogged in" in Houghton, and his flight was delayed.
Oh, and by the way, there were a couple of basketball games played that afternoon, too. Grand Valley State shot 50 percent from the field, including a 67 percent mark in the first half, to record a 60-55 victory over Michigan Tech. Josh Buttner led all MTU players with 16 points and four rebounds.
Despite 15 points and 10 rebounds from junior Amanda Sieja, Michigan Tech suffered just its second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss of the season by a score of 63-44. The Huskies shot just 34 percent from the field, while the Lakers finished with 49 percent shooting.
Thanks to all the participants for the enjoyable day. Unfortunately, our camera's batteries ran out during the event, but we were able to find some new ones and grab a few pictures of Coach Carter.
