The Sixth Annual MTU vs. GVSU Basketball event sponsored by the MTU West Michigan Chapter was held on Thursday evening, February 26, 2004 at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Michigan. A small but enthusiastic group of West Michigan alumni met on a cold but clear evening at the campus of Grand Valley State to witness the always intense rivalry between these two teams. Those who arrived early were treated to a spectacular sunset over the fields and meadows of the western edge of campus. The crowd enjoyed reminiscing past memories of their MTU experience. Discussion ranged from the days of student deferments and avoiding or entering the draft during the Vietnam War era to more current issues such as finding a job for recent graduates.

Following the 6:00 start of the first game participants enjoyed sandwiches, chips, drinks (the non-alcoholic variety) and too-sweet (if there is such a thing) brownies in the upper mezzanine area of the Arena Fieldhouse. Between games, and between mouthfuls of chips and sandwiches, an update on West Michigan alumni activities was presented. This included preliminary information on the upcoming Tech vs. Grand Valley football game the coming fall – to be held at the Big House in Ann Arbor. More information on this major event will be sent out later as the plans are developed.
The gather concluded with the awarding of Tech memorabilia, compliments of Steph Olsson and the Alumni Association, to many of the attendees.
Oh, and by the way, there were a couple of basketball games played that evening, too. The Lady Huskies over came an early 9-point deficit to beat the Lady Lakers by a score of 71 to 57. The Husky men however could not get their game going and never threatened the Lakers, who end up winning with by final score of 83 to 63. Thanks to all the participants for the enjoyable evening.
